Taking Action, Sexual Education and Music for a Cause: Talking Shop with Answer Exec Elizabeth Schroeder

28 May

As Sub City- Hopeless Records’ non-profit organization- wraps up its 10th annual Take Action Tour featuring Silverstein, Bayside, Polar Bear Club The Swellers and Texas in July, we sincerely hope that at least some of our readers had a chance to catch the bands at one of their many stops these last few weeks, not only for the music but for message it brought with it.

Every year the Take Action Tour chooses a cause and a line-up of notable bands, then spends a few weeks going across the country to share information and promote support for their chosen organization. This year’s focus was on Answer, the national organization based out of New Jersey’s Rutgers University, which promotes sexual education and a goal to improve resources for teens through their publication, Sex, Etc. Written for teens, by teens, along with a panel of health and sexuality experts. Covering topics from STDs and pregnancy to relationships and sexual orientation, Sex, Etc. provides a platform for teens to ask questions, get answers and join a community of sexually educated peers.
Answer also heads a national Sexuality Education Project Initiative, which provides training, resources and technically assistance to more than 5,000 educational professionals per year.
The tour will play out its final show tonight at Best Buy Theater in NYC but even if you didn’t get a chance to catch the shows and hear about the cause there, you can still visit the Answer website, Take Action Tour homepage or read our interview with Answer’s Executive Director, Elizabeth Schroeder, who took some time to talk to us recently about her organization, their goals and he own experience with sexual education.

You can also support the cause by purchasing Take Action- A Compilation for Charity Volume 10, which is now available from most retailers.

Read on to see our interview with Answer exec Elizabeth Schroeder.

5 Songs for a Hump Day Slump: The Railroad Revival Tour

27 Apr

You may or may not have heard about the Railroad Revival Tour featuring Mumford and Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, and for those of you who haven’t here is the gist:  Traveling exclusively in vintage rail cars, the three bands are  journeying across the American Southwest over the course of a week. Starting the tour off on  April 21st in Oakland, California  and finishing it April 27th in New Orleans, the bands have been playing outdoor concerts at each stop, enjoying the 2,000 mile trip across 5 states in vintage train cars pulled by steam powered locomotives. Reviewsic Editor Sam Gordon will be catching the last night of the tour in New Orleans tonight, and in honor of her excitement, we focused week’s Hump Day Slump List around the great bands taking part in the tour. Because we love these three groups so much (and its hard to equally distribute 5 slots among 3 bands…) we’re even giving the Slump list a BONUS song, amping the list up to 6 instead of its usual 5. Oh joy!

Tour Announcements and Free Tunes from After The Fall

14 Apr
Albany, NY punk trio, After the Fall, are kicking off a season of summer touring with a string of six shows across Quebec and Ontario this Saturday. The band will be returning to the north in May for the Pouzza Fest in Montreal before heading across the pond for a two week tour with Massachusetts’ Smartbomb. Some dates are still being confirmed but curious European show goers can scope out the tentative route below.  After The Fall will be touring on their latest full-length, Eradication, which saw its release by Mightier Than Sword Records at the end of 2010. Recorded by Jay Maas (Title Fight, Soul Control, Verse, Transit ) and mastered by Jason Livermore ( Good Riddance, Less Than Jake, Rise Against, All, MXPX ), the record features guest vocals from the likes of No Trigger’s Tom Rheault and James Carroll of Make Do And Mend.  While faster, harder and perhaps more incendiary than anything the band has recorded in the past, After The Fall still holds tight to an undeniably anthemic, melodic edge. Eradication is available in both 12″ and CD format.  You can pick up a copy from the band at shows or grab one from the label here.

Eradication is also streaming in its entirety at Bandcamp and you can grab two free mp3s below.

Detroit’s Fireworks Release Free Track off Upcoming Album

10 Apr

Detroit’s Fireworks have just posted a free track (“Summer”) for download, in anticipation of the May 24release of their Brian McTernan-produced full-length Gospel on Triple Crown Records.Gospel is also now also available for pre-order at: www.merchdirect.com/fireworks. Fresh off a two week tour of the UK with Make Do & Mend, Fireworks are now back in the states and have just started their co-headline “Manscout Jamboree” tour with The Wonder Years, with support from Such Gold, Make Do and Mend and Living with Lions. In speaking of the new album, guitarist Chris Mojan explains,Gospel represents Fireworks better than anything we’ve done in the past. I think it really is the photo for the fundamentals we started this band on. The songs came so naturally and working with Brian (McTernan) pushed them and us to a level we’ve never came close to reaching in the past. Fireworks Lives.”
