Lake County Rock- Cereboca

January 3, 2010

Hailing from the Lake County, local band Cereboca is a band of straight up rock and raw sound. With strong bass lines, tights drums and gritty vocals, the band is somewhat of a throwback to 90’s grunge without feeling too outdated. It’s members, charismatically dubbed Fuzzy, Bull, and Moons, are past members of Poor Pauly, 86 Strict, Hole Shot and Overtone. We’d place them somewhere among the likes of Shinedown and Bush, a comparison we feel they’ll warm to considering that, like the aforementioned, they “…just want to play Rock N Roll…so we do. We play fun songs that we like. If you do too, bonus, if not, whatever.”

Cereboca gives explanation for their name on their myspace blog, saying “Cere = prefix meaning reasoning organ, Boca = mouth in the spanish language.” They realize Reasoning Organ can mean many things, and urge their listeners to interpret it’s name as they like.
Reviewsic had the chance to listen to a three-track demo from the band, including their songs Leaving, Nawbridge, and The Lie.
Of the three, our favorite was Nawbridge, because of its tight and somewhat twangy bass line, cadence march-like drums, and its vocals (which shine the best in the last 60 seconds of the song)
We enjoyed The Lie for its subdued and more ballad style vocals, but felt a little bored by the instrumentals. The same goes for the first track, Leaving, mainly because it starts out hard and strong but quickly fades into monotony until the guitar solo at 2:33.

Our one major complaint is that while it’s apparent our vocalist has a strong instrument and all the grit required to make us rock out, he somehow comes across a little too manicured and reserved for our taste. We like to think that live he might offer up a little more emotion and gusto in a live setting, so for now we’re giving the benefit of the doubt.
Overall we think Cereboca is a safe bet for fans of Pearl Jam and Tool, and we have a feeling they’ll continue to prosper in the Lake County scene.

D.I.Y Done Right- Feedback Magazine

January 3, 2010

Feedback Magazine is an up and coming music publication based in Lake County, IL. Making it’s debut in October of 2008, the zine comes out every other month, with a focus on local bands in the Midwest, news in the scene, and upcoming shows. Including features such as musician specific articles (columns for drummers, guitarists, etc), music and show reviews, as well as a regular DIY column, the zine is an excellent resource for local bands new and old. Out of town bands planning to tour the Midwest should be sure to ad Feedback to their list of people to contact as well. There’s even a classifieds section to help spread the word of who’s hiring in the local music scene.

Reader submissions are accepted, as are albums for review- so bands, take advantage of their request and send in your music.
With a circulation of 2,000 free issues every other month, Feedback is spreading the word in a big way, yet still managing to keep ad rates low enough for even the youngest of musicians to take advantage of.
